Q: I wear glasses. Is mascara even useful/noticeable when wearing glasses? What can I do to look nice and natural while being a four-eyes?
Mascara is the icing on the cake. Without it, your eyes aren’t as well defined as they could be. With mascara, your eyes are more prominent, and they demand attention! Especially with glasses! First, let’s take into consideration what type of vision correction needs you have, because it changes how you apply mascara.
- If you are farsighted or have very thick lenses (i.e., a grade of 300 and up), your lenses will magnify your eyes. So, you need to take particular care in applying mascara and make sure your luscious lashes are well-defined without any clumps.
- Nearsighted or shortsighted lenses make eyes appear smaller, so mascara then needs to brighten the eyes. And you really need to make sure your mascara is voluminous, and be sure to apply several coats!
Secondly, we need to find the correct mascara color that suits you best. Depending on your skin tone, hair color and eye color, there is a huge selection of available shades. Black is a great basic color to have, if not for the day, but for night time if you want to add some drama to your look. Dark brown and medium brown are great colors to enhance blue and green eyes, but usually only look good with lighter hair colors and skin tones.
To give you a better idea of how to choose mascara to brighten each eye color, try Cover Girl Exact Eyelights Eye Brightening Mascara, for $8.99. It has light-reflecting metallics and a hint of tint to bring out your blues, browns, hazels and greens. You can purchase it online at Ulta, or at your local Cover Girl distributor.
When you have found your perfect shade, follow these steps for amazing, intense lashes:
- Deposit your wand onto the lash line in a side to side motion, then stroke up and outwards following your natural lash. Reapply another coat or two. Maximum 3 coats for farsighted, but nearsighted can apply more if desired.
- After drying, use a heated eyelash curler, such as Sephora’s, which is available for $16. This is a great product that not only curls your lashes but will de-clump as well! After it’s turned on, apply the same way that you apply mascara with the wand, but hold and slowly stroke upwards to give the lash its curl.
- Or, you can also de-clump and define the lashes with a lash comb such as Sephora Brand Lash and Brow comb, $6. A 2-in-1 Sephora Brand Lash Comb and Curler is also available for $5.
I hope you now have a new outlook on just how amazing your lashes can be!
